This is first steps of Russian Localization. So far so good, I can even see changes in the game, but I found problems with fonts - have to think how I can handle this. Found old font in the web, but it look like they are not compatable. Places where I see changes (my marks) are Main Menu Text and Acatana map.

What's in here:

  • Created a folder for localization;
  • Translated few files for test purposes.

Excellent!

Is it ready to be committed?

EDIT: You should check whether your files need to be encoded in UTF-8, UTF-8-BOM or UTF-16-LE. Most of UT2004's original localization files were encoded in UTF-16-LE.

Hello! I just started to work, so right now there are only few files are completed. So I hope to finish the whole translation in a week (You could say I bagsied localization spot and would like to finish the translation :D)

Btw, thank you for the advice, I'm gonna test it

P.S. Oh, I have question - is it okay that I commit here, and then commit in the OldUnreal-Localization? Otherwise, github gives me an error.

UPD: Encoding changes nothing, but I found the old pirate translation. They swapped original font files (UT2003Fonts and 2K4Fonts) with custom ones.

The original font file:

The pirate one (I've added _rut by myself for testing purposes, but game doesn't seem to react):

So in the game I see a little changes.

Original

Custom (pirate) one:

I even tried to add lines into Manisfest.ini - doesn't seem to work as well. Maybe I should remove English letters like in _kot traslation?

That's because you don't need to rename or replace anything. You have to specify the font files themselves in GUI2k4.rut (just find all the instances of Font and try replacing them, they're at the bottom of the file.

I just wanted to download the patch and was wondering where the Russian language was (for some reason there's a page about it on the wiki), but they're actually doing just that, cool.

@NeonKnightOA You are my savior! Yeah, finally they are working as inteded:

  1. Specified fonts in the GUI2K4.rut
  2. Converted to UTF-16 LE with BOM

Excellent! Another advice: put this PR on draft status until you have everything ready.

@NightGuardianX NightGuardianX changed the title Russian localization - first steps (alpha version) Russian localization Feb 21, 2026
* The game's main menu has been fully translated;
* Game modes, team biographies, and character descriptions have been translated;
* Few maps have been translated as well.

Progress is going well. The question regarding the translation of common nouns (weapons, for example) remains open. I left the team names as is (as per the comment in the document), but have translated the weapons for now (looking at other languages). I believe either the original should be retained or the name should be duplicated (for example, [Russian name] ([English name]))

File is so huge, it's not even showing

Well, it's called LOCALization for a reason. Proper names (team names, character names, location proper names, company names) shouldn't be modified, however gamemode names, weapon/item names, arena names (except those with a proper name), etc, are fair game. And recurring names should stay consistent across all three games, if only for consistency's sake.

About recurring names - I think it will need some localization fixes later

Whatever changes you feel need to be addressed, you're free to do them as needed.

I tried to integrate existing UT2004 old localization
And it looks like I followed the same path

I have loc patch archive from steam community containing .int's and 2 .utx files with fonts 2K4Fonts.utx and UT2003Fonts.utx
I look how korean .kot localization is set as it uses custom fonts too

So I've did:

1.Renamed translated .int files to .rut format and placed in SystemLocalized
2.Set Language=rut in ut2004.ini,
3.Renamed the textures to _rut.utx,
4.Created a GUI2K4.rut file (copied from .int), and link _rut.utx files in FontArrayNames sections

However, I don't know how to make my GUI2K4.rut load, similar to how the Korean locale _kot is set up.

It seems there's some option that needs to be configured somewhere (link GUI2K4.rut somehow).

.rut files in SystemLocalized work if I just replace font .utx files - so I'm on the right way. points 1 and 2 are correct
